A St. John’s resort has been ruled out for the summer, after it was revealed that a hotel has been built on the property.
A source close to the development told The Canadian Press that the St. Francis-St. Thomas International Resort was built on land owned by the St Thomas Aquinas College.
St. Stephen, which is owned by St. George Catholic Church, is also listed on the land.
A St Thomas spokeswoman said the resort has no confirmed plans to reopen and said a decision has not been made about the future of the property or the St Joseph Hotel.
She did not immediately respond to questions from The Canadian News about whether the resort was in jeopardy.
It was not immediately clear why the school has not returned to its previous name, St. Joseph.
The school’s name was changed in 1995 to St. Joesph’s University after the former school was shuttered.
St John’s did not return calls seeking comment.
The resort was also the site of a controversial 2014 incident in which a man drove his car into a group of children who were visiting the school.
The driver was charged with two counts of assault and is awaiting trial.
